Alejandro De Santana Albornoz is a Venezuelan-born composer, singer, and instrumentalist whose music reflects his global upbringing and profound passion for folk traditions. His compositions explore themes of cultural identity, mental health, faith, and the beauty of nature, focusing on storytelling and emotional expression.
Currently pursuing a degree in composition at Michigan State University, Alejandro’s works have been performed by ensembles, including the Michigan State Symphony Orchestra, the BRACE New Music Choir, The Michigan State University Chorale, and the Snow Pond Chamber Players. His compositions, such as Herança: Reverie and Íkaros, showcase his interest in fusing traditional and contemporary styles, drawing inspiration from jazz, classical Afro-Caribbean, and Latin American music to create innovative and resonant works.
As a performer, Alejandro is active in both classical and popular settings. He has played fretted instruments with Michigan State University choirs, performed as a tenor soloist, and contributed to MSU’s Salsa Verde ensemble. His community engagement includes leadership roles with the Verna D. Holley Project, which fosters connections through African-American spirituals and gospel music.
Alejandro’s work embodies a deep commitment to bridging traditions, amplifying underrepresented voices, and using music as a powerful medium for connection and storytelling.
